About 36 miles to Sylvan Lake
Custer State Park Camping From the Middle of the Black Hills
Bison on the Wildlife Loop, granite spires on the Needles Highway, and a swim at Sylvan Lake. Do the park as a day trip and come back to a quieter campground with food and fuel on site.
A day in Custer State Park from camp
Custer State Park covers roughly 71,000 acres in the southern Black Hills and is home to one of the largest publicly owned bison herds in the country. Custer Crossing sits about 36 miles north of Sylvan Lake, roughly an hour, at 22036 Hwy 385. That puts the park in easy reach for a full day while keeping Deadwood, Sturgis, and Pactola close the rest of your trip.
- Morning: head south on US-385 through Hill City and enter the park at Sylvan Lake. Walk the shoreline trail before it gets busy.
- Late morning: drive the Needles Highway (SD-87) past the Cathedral Spires and the Needles Eye tunnel.
- Afternoon: loop the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road for bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and the begging burros.
- Evening: return via Iron Mountain Road for the Mount Rushmore views, then eat at Custer's Last Meal.
A Custer State Park entrance license is required for vehicles in the park. Check the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks website for current licenses, road conditions, and seasonal closures.
Know before you drive
The Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road have narrow tunnels and tight switchbacks. Leave the big RV or trailer at camp and take a car, truck, or motorcycle. Give bison plenty of room. They are wild animals, they are faster than they look, and they often stand in the road.
Why stay at Custer Crossing instead of in the park
Campsites inside the park fill early in summer, and it is a long drive from the park to Deadwood, Sturgis, or Spearfish. A central base on US-385 splits the difference: the park, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse to the south, and Deadwood and the northern Hills a short drive north.
- About 20 full-hookup RV sites with water, sewer, and electric, plus a fire pit and picnic table
- About 11 camping cabins with two queen beds, heat and A/C, mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and a deck (cabins)
- Tent sites with a picnic table and campfire ring (tent camping)
- Clean bathrooms, hot showers, and laundry
- Custer's Last Store and Gas: fuel including 91 octane, propane, ice, firewood, and supplies
- Custer's Last Meal, our on-site restaurant, home of the Burger Challenge
- Wi-Fi across the park, dog-friendly camping, and on-site UTV rentals
